How does renting a campervan work?
It couldn’t be easier to start your campervan journey with us! At Just Kampers Hire you’ll be able to browse a wide range of vans across the country, connect with verified van owners and have the support of our trusted platform behind you every step of the way. Find out more about How Just Kampers Hire works.
How much does it cost to hire a campervan?
This depends on the price that the individual campervan owner sets for their vehicle. Typically, during the peak season (June – August), you’ll see prices that range from £80 - £160 per night. The price you’ll pay will reflect the type of vehicle you want to hire, its location, the number of people it sleeps, whether they allow pets and the time of year you’re wanting to travel.
If a campervan owner has their own insurance, then the cost of this will have been factored into the per night price. If the owner doesn’t have their own insurance included, we will add our Just Kampers insurance and breakdown cover to your booking price which will be clearly displayed in the total cost. This is priced from £23 per night.
You may also want to book extra amenities that the owner is offering with their campervan, for example bed linens, a bike rack or an awning. For some listings these will be included in the total price but others may choose to add a charge. The prices for any extras will be visible on the listing and added to your total at checkout.
You will also need to pay a security deposit of £750 which will be taken within 7 days prior to collection. Additionally, depending on the cancellation policy that is applicable to your chosen campervan, you may need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £150 at time of booking. You can find out more about deposits in our terms and conditions.
How are the campervan rental rates determined?
Campervan owners can set their own rates and they will take several factors into consideration when setting their prices: including age, model, season, insurance and amenities.
What is included in the price of hiring a campervan?
Your campervan rental will include the cost of the vehicle for the duration of your rental and the vehicle’s insurance and breakdown cover, it may also include some accessories or amenities, but these will be clearly stated in the listing. There are no hidden costs that you will encounter.
We do take a security deposit to help settle any disputes and discrepancies, as well as to cover the campervan owner for any breakages. This is fully refundable providing both you and the campervan owner are both in agreement. If the campervan owner selects a Standard Cancellation Policy, you will also pay a £150 non-refundable deposit.
Will my campervan include bed linen?
This is up to the individual campervan owners. You might find that some offer bed linen for no extra charge and others may add it as an optional extra. It will be clearly noted in the listing if it is included without charge or if you can add it for an extra cost.
What isn’t included in the price of hiring a campervan?
Every campervan owner sets their own ground rules, meaning what is and isn’t included will vary between listings. Each owner will specify in their ground rules whether you can take their campervan to Europe, festivals or on winter sports trips and if they accept pets.
Some campervans may include amenities such as bed linen and table and chairs free of charge, whereas others might charge extra for these and anything else they would like to offer. If they are charging an additional fee for any amenities, the extra cost will be clear on their listing.
What extras can campervan owners offer?
If owners are offering certain amenities or services at an extra charge, you’ll be able to see what they are offering in their listing, as well as how much they are charging for these extras.
These can be added at time of booking, or you can go back at a later stage too add these to your booking.
These extra amenities or services may include:
- Glamping kits
- Bed linen
- Camping table and chairs
- Extra drivers or pets
Is there a mileage limit?
Yes, individual campervan owners will set their own mileage limit. They select a limit per day and per annum. 12,000 miles is often the standard annual limit although with older vans you may see limits around the 6,000 mile mark. If a campervan owner allows you to travel to Europe, their milage limit should reflect this.
Is there a fuel charge?
No, there is no upfront charge for fuel, however, you will have to pay for any fuel that you’ll need during your holiday.
When you check a campervan listing you will be able to see how full the owner wants the fuel tank to be when the vehicle is returned to them e.g full tank, half-full or empty. They will supply it in the same condition on collection. Owners, more often than not, fill the tank for you before you leave and will expect it to be returned with a full tank.
Do all campervans have insurance?
Yes. All campervans listed on our website will be fully insured for you to rent them out. If the owner of the campervan you are wanting to hire doesn’t have insurance for hire drivers as standard, we will add our Just Kampers Insurance to your booking and the policy will be taken out in your name.
The insurance quote and identity checks are done in real-time during the booking process so you’re ready to go as soon as you confirm your booking. You will see this added to the total price of your booking before you check out. Prices are from £18 per day.
There is a chance that the quote may change between the booking date and the collection date but this is only if your circumstances have changed. If there is any difference in cost, you will be notified of this before we take final payment.
Who does the insurance cover?
Our Just Kampers Hire Insurance covers 21 to 89 year-olds with a full valid driving licence. It covers you to drive in the UK and Europe and up to 4 drivers can be placed on the insurance.
If you have more than 6 points on your licence or have any driving convictions, you won't be covered. People in certain professions may also not be covered by a vehicle’s insurance policy. However, as all bookings are made in real-time, you will be made aware at the time of booking if the policy doesn’t apply to you.
If using a campervan owner’s individual policy, they might have different conditions that you’ll be able to request from them or see in their profile. As well as this, the campervan owner may request certain documentation from you in order to validate their policy, for example 2 forms of proof of address. If this is a requirement, they will contact you once the booking is confirmed to make sure you know what is expected.
Will I need to take out extra insurance?
We will make sure that you, and the vehicle, are fully insured for you driving the campervan. However, we always recommend that you also have a valid travel insurance policy.
Do all campervans have breakdown cover?
Yes, all campervans will have breakdown cover for rental. This works in the same way as our insurance policy, so if the owner doesn’t have breakdown cover for renting their vehicle, we will add our Just Kampers breakdown cover on to your booking and this will be in your name.
You will see this added to the total price of your booking before you check out, prices start from £5 per day.
I have points on my licence, can I still hire a campervan?
If you have more than 6 points on your licence, you will not be able to hire a campervan through our website.
Where can I find details of the insurance policy?
If your vehicle is insured through the campervan owner’s own policy, you can request to view their insurance documents direct with them.

It is your responsibility to provide all requested documentation when you are collecting the vehicle. Failure to do so may mean you are not able to travel.
Can the campervan be delivered to me?
Currently, this isn’t an option on our website. However, in the coming weeks we hope to give owners the option to add a delivery service, with a charge, to their listings.
Campervan owners will typically want you to pick up their campervan from their property or somewhere convenient to them. The approximate location will be displayed publicly within their listing and the address for handover will only be shown to you once your booking is confirmed.
What happens if I'm late returning the campervan?
If you are running late on the day you are due to return the campervan, you’ll need to let the owner know as soon as possible. As the campervan owner will need to use the time in-between bookings to conduct checks and get their van ready for their next guests, we do charge a late return fee of £75 for every hour that you are late returning the campervan.
You can find more details about this policy in our terms and conditions.
Do I need to clean the campervan before returning?
This will depend on the ground rules set by the owner and details will be clearly displayed in their listing. If they do want you to clean the van before you return it, they will discuss this with you when you collect the campervan.
We recommend that campervan owners maintain high standards of hygiene in accordance with COVID-19 advice, and they might have some guidelines for you to follow during your trip. For details on the Just Kampers policy you can review the Insurance Policy and Breakdown Cover.

You may be required to contact the insurer or breakdown provider depending on the terms of your hire. You should take photos of any damage and the location if applicable. If a third party is involved, then you should take their contact details. When you collect your vehicle from the owner, you will be asked to do a condition report, along with the owner, that you will both need to agree to and sign off together on our app. Here you will note any pre-existing damage and general condition of the camper. On return, you will review the condition of the vehicle and any new damage will be noted and, again, agreed by both parties.
We have put together a guide to help determine the difference between ‘wear and tear’ and ‘damage’. This is intended to help both you and the owner when determining damage, it is by no means exhaustive nor is it legally binding.
We will assist in facilitating a resolution to any dispute of damage between parties if and when required.
Do the campervan owners have to take covid-19 cleaning measures?
Yes, we have a list of cleaning recommendations that are in line with current health and hygiene advice that van owners should respect, which you can read here.
